Thermaltake Ghetto Mod Competition
9 April 2009

Some of you may remember the Thermaltake Best Build competition held last August.

It was a great success with many uniquely modified PCs entered and since then we've been flooded by enquiries on when we will be holding another competition.

After reading through the feedback across many forums we noticed that many mentioned the previous competition was a bit unfair giving a brand new PC to someone who already has a kick ass custom system. There were a few suggestions made for a new competition and we've adopted one of the most popular ideas. GHETTO MODS!

That's right, ghetto baby. We want you to enter your system with the most creative or practical and "very financially viable" mods.

Let's face it, not everyone is up to date on the latest and greatest gear. The ghetto DIY mods have always been around and occasionally ones which are extremely practical or just downright CHEAP pops up and are generally loved for their ingenuity at little or no cost to the owner! We liked the idea  too so read on to find out more...

The general rule to keep in mind; CHEAP and WORKING. If the system or the mod in question does not actually work then the entry will be disqualified.

Here's an example... let's say you have Pentium 2 gear lying around and you loved the original Need For Speed PC game which doesn't work at all on new hardware / OS. You decide you want to utilise the Pentium 2 system but you don't have a case for it and even the cheapest $25 case is too expensive. So you've gone ghetto and built your own case for this system out of cardboard! Now you can enjoy playing old school Win95/98 games without fear of incompatibility and a bunch of messy bits lying on your desk. If this case falls apart when you pick it up, it obviously does not qualify as working. Same applies for the system inside, if it doesn't actually power up and unable to boot into the OS, it does not qualify as working.

Check out the following examples for inspiration. Click on thumbnails to enlarge. These are just images we found by trawling the web so if you can create something even better, equally ghetto or funny, submit it and you could win one of four prizes!

Cardboard case 1

Cold air intake kit

Car rad setup

Cardboard case 2

Home made bay tray

Improved cooling

Since it isn't a race for the most elite system powered by the best gear money can buy, we don't care what the system is powered by, in fact the older the better. Having a original VooDoo 2 SLI setup for example certainly gets extra cool points. The mod must have at least some thought and effort put into it ;) as we've seen some guy placing his case on some polystyrene foam and calling it a "case feet mod". Ghetto alright, definitely funny but doesn't quite stand out like a guy who used a old car radiator in his watercooling loop (refer above).

Thermaltake will decide on the final winner. We will again be on the look out for positive feedback from the community for any particular ghetto mods on their uniqueness, effort, ingenuity and intended purpose / end result. Get involved and support the modders even if you are not competing. The competition will run for exactly 5 weeks starting today (April 16th).

How To Enter:

So how do I enter you ask? Simple, first time users sign up to the Thermaltake Australia forums with a valid email.
